Cerrone looks for lightweight title shot after Tony

Donald Cerrone is eyeing up a lightweight title fight for himself next…once he gets through Tony Ferguson of course. The two men face each other at UFC 238 this weekend in the standout fight on the card.

Its a clash that should have every MMA fan excited as both Tony and Cerrone are pure dynamite inside the cage. Currently Ferguson is the bookies favourite going into the fight, with Cerrone the slightest of underdogs.

Ferguson however has not fought since his win over Anthony Pettis 8 months ago. He is enjoying an 11 fight winning streak though, having not lost since May 2012.

Cerrone on the other hand will be entering his 4th fight in 7 months on Saturday night and is riding high on a 3 fight win streak. His last victory, over Al Iaquinta, was only 1 month ago as Cerrone continues his usual ”quick turnaround” approach to MMA.

Cerrone’s vision

Speaking to Bret Okamoto, Cerrone reassured us that this fight is not rushed. Instead all part of his route to a title fight.

“[These fights have] all lined up to a title. It could be just it happened to be that those are the fights that they lined up. I probably would have said yes either way, I don’t know. But yeah, it’s good. I wanted to fight for the belt this year, I think it’s going to happen.”

Listening to Cerrone, you get the sense it’s more a matter of “when” not “if” he gets his title shot. He even has the scenario set up in his head of how this all plays out.

“I think I’m going to go through Tony and I think Khabib or Dustin are going to get injured and I’m going to fill in in September in Abu Dhabi. Khabib is just really prone to it. I was supposed to fight him 3 or 4 times. Every time he got injured. I think his training mentality and high pace that he pushes is just…he’s prone to injury.”

It would be severely unfortunate for either Khabib or Dustin to pull out of their fight injured. It is nice to know though that Cowboy is waiting in the wings to step in at the drop of a hat.
